Rainbow Group began in 1998 as a unique coalition that brought together several smaller coalitions of nonprofit housing providers and people living with HIV/AIDS into one unified organization. From the beginning, it was a mandate of the coalition that it be an organizing and advocacy organization that was led by the people it served. The AIDS Housing Network originally was housed at the Supportive Housing Network of New York. In January, 2000, the New York City AIDS Housing Network incorporated and became an independent organization. In the short time since the NYC AIDS Housing Network has been around, we have achieved many victories for our membership of low-income people living with HIV/AIDS: Our most miraculous victory was the result of our DASIS Human Rights Project, in which we fought to secure the right of New Yorkers living with AIDS to emergency housing placements through our constant human rights monitoring of welfare centers.
